Cycling in Tweed is excellent these days with the recent establishment of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail and the Uki Mountain Bike trails.
Beyond these two excellent facilities, many of the back roads are quiet and the scenery most pleasant even in winter – which is actually the best time to ride in the Tweed Shire. There are a few roads to avoid if possible, Kyogle Road and Clothiers creek road, mainly due to lack of shoulder and higher than average traffic volume. Best bike for the Tweed? Now days anything, whether its gravel, road or mountain bike there are some excellent ride opportunities in the Tweed.

Gravel
Gravel Rides
Some of the best back road and bike rides in the Tweed are connected by gravel roads that keep you off the beaten path and out of the way of the local traffic. Yes it would be nice to go seriously off road – but there are no legal MTB trails in the Tweed Shire so here are some gravel connections to keep the dust kicking in the meantime.
Tyalgum Tour
This loop is a great introduction to gravel in the Tweed featuring some great coffee spots, half gravel half sealed through some National Park for scenic appreciation.
Burringbar Burn
Need something a little more challenging? This loop leaving from Burringbar takes in some of the funnest and hardest gravel in the area. Easy to make some shorter routes from.
A bit of a bump
A short loop favourite with fantastic views to the coast and a nice descent to finish. There is some climbing to get those views and the top section of gravel is well….
The Big Weekend
We took inspiration from the Thunderbolts Ride by Graveleur for this loop to make a 2 – 3 day epic gravel indulgence.

The Tweed is a great connection of small villages with some lesser known back roads to get there. Along the way is great coffee, amazing ice cream and some of Australia’s premier beer and spirit producers, plus quiet pubs to serve them. Here area few of the local favourites assembled by Lindsay C for the Wollumbin Bicycle Users Group.
Stokers – Uki Loop.
37km and few hills but Kyogle road is pretty busy on weekends these days. Still its worth the ride for the post office coffee!
Murwillumbah – Chillingham
The national series race Battle on the Border loves this loop for its challenging hills and scenic road, plus the ice cream in Tyalgum.
Urliup & Mcauleys
With scenic views and a touch of gravel to keep the cars away this has got to be one of the hidden gems of a road ride.
Murwillumbah to Coast
Some great hills only bettered by the great produce and coffee at – well everywhere. No really the cafes are awesome.

The Northern Rivers Rail Trail has been one of the most significant and successful recreations infrastructure projects undertaken by the Tweed Shire Council in conjunction with the NRRT Trust. With over 180,000 visitations within two years has become the significant tourism drawcard to the Shire.
But just down for the day or coastal weekend trip? The coastal fringe still has some great family cycling with the cycleway running from Kingscliff to Cabarita making for a safe connection between the coast villages.
There is also the excellent Cabarita Skate Park !
